Celebrate the 5th Anniversary of I LOVE My Feet Day!
August 17th is the 5th anniversary of I LOVE My Feet Day! I created it to encourage everyone to take good care of their feet and give them TLC. My encouragement developed into passion so strong that in 2016 I established our nonprofit organization, the Jenkins Donelson Foundation (JDF). Our nonprofit promotes foot health and healthy lifestyles for the homeless and underserved. We also create interactive Health Fairs that teach low-income families how to improve their foot health and general health. Our nonprofit has helped thousands of people in the last 4 years by providing health tips, shoes, socks, clothing, and a wide assortment of goods to those in need.
It all began with webbed toes
People frequently ask me how I became interested in foot health. It started in elementary school when I noticed my friend Joanne had what I thought of as Siamese Toes. Two of her toes on each foot were fused, similar to the webbed feet of ducks and frogs. I’ve been looking at feet ever since. If I had known about the podiatry field as a kid, I might have considered becoming a foot doctor. Each of our Health Fairs includes information about becoming a podiatrist so kids can see what a great opportunity it is.
My Feet: An Ode
Fast forward to 2014. I broke the same pinky toe for the second time. Ugh! Between the excruciating pain and hobbling with a cane, I wrote a poem, vowing to appreciate my primary form of transportation. In 2015 a talented artist added her drawings to my poetry, and I published it as a picture book, My Feet: An Ode.
After I published my book, I established I LOVE My Feet Day! I’ve seen it widely ridiculed, and I laugh right along with the chucklers. Once the laughter stops, people begin to consider how important our feet are to our daily lives. Today, this national day is celebrated in the US and abroad. It’s been recognized in the media by radio and television hosts, libraries, retailers, nail salons, podiatrists, physicians, dog lovers, and the masses.
Celebrate with My Feet: An Ode
In celebration of the 5th anniversary of I LOVE My Feet Day!, proceeds from all sales of My Feet: An Ode, will go to our nonprofit. In addition to pampering your feet on August 17th, you can elevate them as you cuddle and read this sweet book to your kids and grandkids. If you are social distancing like many of us are, you can ship the book to your loved ones or share it during your next Zoom call.
Our foot health parallels our general health. Learning to take good care of our feet is a win-win. Thank you for supporting our nonprofit so we can continue to help those in need during this pandemic.
