Fight Back! Ankle Strengthening Tips

Do you travel on uneven surfaces? Has it become ‘normal’ for your feet to roll over on their side when you walk in high heels? Are you an athlete who pounds their feet on the ground everyday? All of these things can help weaken your ankles and cause the ankle ligaments to stretch too far.  And that, my friend, is a recipe for ankle sprains. There are 25,000 ankle sprains reported each day. Many people never seek medical care for their sprains so the more than 9 million ankle sprains reported each year is lower than the actual figure. Ouch!

The great news is, you can fight back! You can perform several very easy exercises to strengthen your ankles. These simple exercises can help minimize your risk of ankle sprains. Making the time to invest in strengthening your ankles is the best protection you can give your active feet. Your ankles won’t roll over as easily when you traverse those uneven paths. You’ll also have better balance, which is a big ‘plus’ when you wear high heels.

If you’ve already suffered a sprained ankle, your physical therapists probably taught you these tips during rehab, so this is a quick refresher for you. Either performing these exercises as a preventive measure or rehab follow up; you can easily incorporate them in your daily exercise routine. Publishing My Feet: An Ode led to annual recognition of good foot care and appreciation. It was also the impetus for the Good Foot Care movement. Carolyn believes our feet tell a story about our lives. She is passionate about promoting good foot care and she is quickly becoming the " Ambassador of Feet". She is a Foot & Shoe Consultant and refers countless people to podiatrists.
