Warm Feet on Snow Days

We all enjoy playing in the snow. It’s the one time adults can let truly their hair down and behave like kids again. Kids live for snow days. As soon as the new school year begins, kids begin daydreaming of snow days and when they can play in the snow. Playing in the snow is a family activity that doesn’t get old until we do.

Check out our five easy ways you can ensure you and your kids can keep your tootsies warm and healthy while enjoying the snow.

  1. Foot warmers! This is one of the best inventions ever made! Drop one in each of your shoes and they will keep your feet warm for hours. Hand warmers are also available and they work just as well for your hands.
  2. Wearing layers of socks helps to keep feet and toes warm while playing outside. If you don’t have enough socks, wrapping your feet in layers of newspaper will help keep them warm.
  3. Keep your feet dry. Wearing water-resistant shoes or boots helps to keep feet dry.  If you don’t have shoes or boots that are water-resistant, consider wrapping your socks and shoes in plastic. Small grocery bags, shower caps, or plastic cooking wrap can all help to keep feet dry. Prolonged moisture on shoes and feet can lead to illness so avoid it at all costs.
  4. Keep an eye on the clock and the temperatures. Based on the temperature, you may need to limit younger children’s time outside. When temperatures drop below freezing, 32 degrees, everyone should consider limiting their playtime to an hour or less. It’s easy to go back inside, warm up, dry out your shoes and socks and then resume your outside play.
  5.  Frostbite and hypothermia are very painful. When you go back indoors, warm up your entire body and pay special attention to your feet and toes. Immediately take off your shoes and socks. Dry your feet and toes. Put warm socks on and wrap your feet in a warm towel or blanket so they can warm up slowly. Take note if your feet are discolored or if they hurt. If the pain or discoloration lasts for an extended amount of time, contact your doctor.
