What Color Are Your Toenails (Under Your Polish)?

When was the last time you looked at your unpolished toenails? If you get regular pedicures that always end with new nail polish, it may have been a long time. Did you know that wearing toenail polish for too long can harm your toenails?

Toenail polish is pretty, and many of us feel it gives our feet and outfits a finished look. Unfortunately, when we don’t allow our toenails to breathe, ‘polish free’ for a few days and weeks, we invite problems. Ugly discolored toenails should be cause for concern. Like our skin, our toenails need to breathe. Nail polish that stays on too long hinders that. It can cause our toenails to change color. Nail polish can seep into the nails and weaken them. Weak toenails can’t fight off bacteria, and this can lead to health problems.

Pedicures that don’t end with new toenail polish are still good foot health practices. Just like the natural, make-up free look is always admired, neatly tapered toenails can be very attractive. Applying extra lotion and moisturizer each day will help give them an enviable look. You’ve got it so together, you don’t need any of the extra frills!

Dr. Joy Rowland, DPM, recommends alternating by wearing toenail polish a few weeks and going without it for a few weeks. If this is your first time uncovering your toenails, take the time to look them over well. If you find your bare toenails have a strange color, make an appoint to see your podiatrist. Your doctor can tell you if you simply need to give the polish a rest for a few weeks or if you have a more serious health concern.

Remember, healthy toenails help keep our feet healthy.  Wearing toenail polish for special occasions and going bare on regular days is a great summer alternative. The links below will provide more guidance from Dr. Rowland on how to keep toenails healthy. Carolyn's interest in feet began in college when she met a young lady who was born without arms. The student used her feet as hands by writing and eating with them. Everyone on campus was very impressed with that students' ability to overcome adversity and the respect and awe she garnered was well deserved. Carolyn earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education and never forgot the young lady. Carolyn learned about the importance of good foot care from her mother, who was a diabetic. After Carolyn experienced foot pain she visited a podiatrist and discovered she had fallen arches. Carolyn traced the cause back to wearing flip flops that didn't provide arch support. Years later, after two pinky toe breaks, Carolyn's appreciation and respect for feet deepened and she wrote an ode to feet. In the spring of 2015 a talented illustrator brought her poem to life and Carolyn published My Feet: An Ode, which celebrates the wonderful versatility our feet provide us throughout our lifetime. Publishing My Feet: An Ode led to annual recognition of good foot care and appreciation. It was also the impetus for the Good Foot Care movement. Carolyn believes our feet tell a story about our lives. She is passionate about promoting good foot care and she is quickly becoming the " Ambassador of Feet".
